The AAO-HNS has released new, evidence-based clinical guidelines for diagnosing and managing age-related hearing loss, with a key recommendation to screen patients aged 50 and older for hearing loss3 during healthcare visits.


These guidelines emphasize hearing aids as the primary intervention for mild to moderate hearing loss, highlighting their critical role in improving auditory function, enhancing quality of life, and reducing cognitive decline.


ENTs are encouraged to diagnose hearing loss and to actively refer patients for hearing aids, as evidence shows they improve communication, foster social engagement, and help prevent cognitive decline linked to untreated hearing loss.


In fact, recent studies have shown that hearing intervention can slow down loss of thinking and memory abilities by 48% over 3 years in older adults at risk 4. Given that hearing health is one of the most modifiable risk factors for cognitive decline that can be actively addressed,5 it presents a significant opportunity for clinicians to positively impact their patients' overall health.
