Phoneme Perception Test

Used to evaluate high frequency audibility and distinction, the Phoneme Perception Test is an assessment tool that indicates if a patient has optimal high frequency speech hearing.

The main benefits of the test

From compatibility across manufacturers to signal processing capabilities, the Phoneme Perception Test has many benefits that hearing care professionals would find useful.

Assessing high frequency hearing

Designed with the goal of improving clients’ speech intelligibility, the results of this test can offer information about potential improvements to a hearing aid’s setting. It is NOAH compatible and available in 14 languages.

Applicable and compatible across manufacturers

The test is compatible across manufacturers which means that it works with devices not developed by Phonak as well. It also allows for signal processing capabilities to be easily compared.

Interface to Phonak Target

Health care providers can receive great results when combining the Phoneme Perception Test with the fitting software Phonak Target. Only Phonak Target can provide an interface to show and apply the results of a preceding test directly in the fitting session. Note that data sharing between fitting software and the test software requires NOAH.

The main features of the test

A host of helpful features, such as three different tests, make the Phoneme Perception Test one of the best ways to get the information needed about a client’s perception.

Hearing aid demonstration

If the test is used during a hearing aid fitting, a hearing care professional can demonstrate all the benefits of a hearing aid, such as improvements in speech intelligibility and frequency lowering. The Phoneme Perception Test 3.0 allows a hearing care professional to use a tablet as a second screen and input device during tests.

Detection test

Similar to a free field hearing test, the detection test is the prerequisite to run the distinction test or recognition test afterwards. It can be done manually with the Audiogram mode, or the client can do it themselves with the self-test mode.

Distinction test

Use this test to assess your client’s ability to distinguish high frequency speech sounds like /sh/ and /s/. The test starts with training your client to adapt to the sounds and the way the test works, and the test flow depends on the results of the preceding detection test.

Recognition test

Use this test to assess your client’s ability to recognize high frequency speech sounds like /sh/ and /s/. The speech sounds are embedded in a pair of vowels to form nonsense words like /a-sh-a/. The test starts with training your client, and you can control the flow while your client operates the test.
