Virto Marvel: small, discreet hearing aids

As part of the hearing care industry, Phonak has closely monitored the rate of hearing aid adoption among the general public for decades. Over a span of time, we have seen only slight improvement in these numbers. As of 2019, only 31 percent of people age 45- to 65-years old with hearing loss use hearing aids.² And, on average, these people waited from 4 to 6 years before purchasing their first set of hearing aids.³

In countries where the nationalized healthcare system provides hearing aids free of charge or at a minimum expense, the 31 percent rises, but only slightly, to 40 percent. When cost is taken out of the equation, what remains, at least in part, is stigma.

Phonak Virto Marvel hearing aids are medical devices with Marvel hearing aid technology. Some of the products in the Virto Marvel portfolio were also designed to be discreet -- whether in its small size or in the way it looks, such as Virto Marvel Black, a stigma-busting hearing aid that looks like a hearable.

Stigma of hearing aids

Why do few people take advantage of hearing aids? Factors suggest reasons for lack of hearing aid use include cost, perceived lack of benefit and denial of hearing loss.⁴ But one of the most difficult disincentives to counteract is the perceived stigma associated with hearing loss and use of hearing aids.⁵

One of the most common reasons people with hearing loss postpone the acquisition of hearing aids until their hearing loss is no longer bearable is because of perceived stigma. They are concerned people will treat them differently if they are seen wearing hearing aids. However, untreated hearing loss can make it challenging to understand colleagues, friends and family. Hearing loss may be associated with several health issues, including:

• Less social interaction and increased loneliness6

• Less participation in activities with friends and events7

• Increased risk of cognitive decline and dementia8

• Increased risk of falls9

Blurring the lines between hearing aid and hearable

Since the release of the first generation of earbuds, the adoption of ear-level technology has exploded. It might seem like everyone is wearing ear-level technology. In addition, smartphones are so central to our lives: work, communication, entertainment. With the prevalence of streaming in public, which if you’re polite, is done wearing headphones. This is impacting the normalization, acceptance and willingness of people to wear an ear-level medical device that look like a set of headphones or earbuds.
